AVOTEC Eligibility and Details

AVOTEC is a special Army skills-training program. The program, which is designed to enable soldiers to enhance their skills through vocational training, makes $4,500 available for such training in FY09 to each soldier on active duty. The $4,500 allowance is reduced by any amount already used for Tuition Assistance in FY09. For example, if a soldier has already used $1,500 in Tuition Assistance in FY09, that soldier may only use $3,000 for AVOTEC courses through the rest of FY09. So far, AVOTEC is only funded through FY09.

All soldiers on active duty, including reserve-component soldiers on active duty for at least six months, are eligible for AVOTEC.

There is no ADSC for participating in AVOTEC.

Training must begin while soldiers are on active duty; training may continue after soldiers have gone off active duty, and must be completed within 18 months of its start. For example, a soldier may begin training on 1 Sep 09, while on active duty, and go off active duty on 1 Oct 09. As long as the training is designed to be completed by 30 Mar 11 (18 months after 1 Sep 09), the training can be paid for by AVOTEC. All courses offered can be completed well within the 18-month limit.

All AVOTEC training programs of instruction must indicate a start date on or before September 30, 2009.
